We have a blended family (my fiance has a daughter 8 and I have 2 boys 9 and 11) and the holidays are always tough because we all believe in spending time with family. This year we're trying something new. Instead of doing a munchkin shuffle on Christmas day we will be taking all 3 kids on Christmas eve early in the day. Watching movies, opening gifts, pigging out. They kids are already planning for NEXT years movies because we can't possiblywatch them all this year. When all is said and done we'll pack the kids in the car with hot coccoa and on the way to bring them to their respective other parents we will look at all the Christmas lights. Not a tradition yet but hopefully one that will continue long after the kids are grown. When searching for a tradition it has to fall in your lap. Have you ever had a midnight snowball fight on Christmas Eve? Yeah it depends on the wather but last year my fiance and I went to ex mother in laws house to participate. think about what you already do. You've got traditions already you just dont call them that

We have an interesting tradition... it's called Mid-Mas. On the 25 of June we have a christmas celebration with presents, gluhwein, Santa and a tree... the works! This way we get to have a mini-christmas in the middle of the year and get all the family and friends around.

My family started a tradition of "adopting" a child for Christmas. We select a child or children every year from a VERY low income family and buy all of their Christmas gifts. It makes us feel so nice to know we gave a child a Christmas that would not have one. Salvation Army can help you in your area if you would like to do the same thing. We actually don't buy gifts for the adults in our family anymore. We only buy gifts for our children and our "adopted"ones. I hope you too will soon have a very rewarding tradition! After all it is not the childrens fault where they come from.
P.S. I've gotten my work involved and they match the money I raise every year (through donations from other employees and myself)! Maybe your work would be interested in doing the same! My coworkers and I have so much fun taking all of the money and buying TONS of toys with it. Last year we raised over $1,200. We hope to raise more this year!!

We make it a habit to watch every version of A Christmas Carol that we can. My kids are grown now, and one is married and not living at home, so its something she has carried to her new family. Getting together to watch a favorite movie (I suggest the Muppet's Christmas Carol), or to read a favorite book, or sing songs. You can all bake christmas cookies, anything that draws the family together.
One thing I told my kids when they were at the age where they were questioning Santa, was that Santa was very generous however Mom was not. So if they wanted something other than socks and underwear for Christmas, they had best keep Santa alive in their hearts. Gifts in our house still come from Santa because Mom is a Scrooge. They are 23, and while its toned down a bit, they still believe in Santa.

Our family does the traditional secret santa. It works especially well with a big family or extended family. That way everyone is satisfied and you don't have to spend a whole lot of money, just buy one good gift for one person. And if you have children, they'll probably love getting in on the secret fun of shopping for someone else and giving them a gift.

Put a nativity scene under your Christmas tree. Then put the three wise men on the other side of the room. Then each day as Christmas gets closer, move the wise men closer to the tree. Then on Christmas day, they're all together. The kids will love it, and it' s something they can participate in as well. Take care.

one tradition i think we should start if we can each afford it is to make sure that we make some donations to charity at Christmas time . i did this one year giving a donation to some over seas program to feed the poor i did this in the name of each of my family members and then they got an envelope with a statement that the donation was in there name and how much it was for .
sure we should continue to by kids presents and each other some but if your out looking for some who falls in to the category as the person who seems to have everything then making the donation to the charity in there name is i think much more worth while then giving another sort of un needed and likely never to be used golf sort of nick knack

If you have young children you will like this. Every year while my children were growing up I would buy them an ornament for the tree. They weren't the expensive kind just an ornament that had some meaning as to what may be going on in their lives that year. Every Christmas when we decorated the tree they put their ornaments on it and the loved it.
When they got married I packed their ornaments for them and gave them to them to do what they want with them. I really thought they would just pack them away but to my surprise they put them on their Christmas trees each year now and are sharing them with their children plus adding more by buying their kids their own ornaments.
