Especially if it is somewhere when they pay less than me and are pesky kids that spoil my experience. And why the senior discounts when they are more likely than average to be wealthy and no mortgage?
It is actually something called a bent demand curve. Businesses would make the most if they charged everyone what they are each individually willing to pay. Maybe I am willing to pay $20 to see that movie and you are willing to pay $15, and some kid only $11. They would make more charging us each a different price and the theatre would be full. However, most of the time they can't discriminate that way. But even if they can create 2 or 3 categories, they may earn more. For some reason we do let them do that with kids. We allow them to charge less, and it could mean extra profits to them so they do. For kids, if the parents have to shell out to pay several kids, they may not have the money you and your date have to pay. But the seats are available so they charge you the adult price and the kids a discounted price. So goes the theory.

It is a fair question. Children take up a seat in the theatre, a seat on a plane. They are the ones making use of the rides at the theme parks (many full-price adults stand by and watch).
I have always thought of it as an incentive for the parents to take children to these activities.
I know I would not be happy paying $15 for a theatre ticket for a 7yr old. This way they at least get another (half) sale from the customer.
And don't forget the other sales that go along with children, the sodas, figurines and popcorn etc.

Maybe because businesses already know how expensive kids can be, and they are giving folks a little of a break. Then the discount stops when they get older, because they know they are old enough to receive an allowance or get a job.
