For a movie: Graveyard of Fireflies because it so graphically portrayed the horrors of war and shows the true victims *the children*
For a series, its tough but I still have to go w/ my Fushigi Yuugi. The reasoning is because the whole series has something for everyone. Action, greed, romance, power, betrayal, friendship, battles, intense drama and serious comedy. One minute you can be laughing at yet another Miaka screw up and literally in the next second be reduced to tears by yet another tragedy*

The best I would have to say Evangelion, Last Exile,Fullmetal Alchemist, GITS Stand Alone Complex 1st. & 2nd gig, Naruto, Fullmetal Panic all three seasons, Cowboy Bebop & Rahxephon; all of these have been the best becasue they all have great stories, incredible characters, very good plots and eye poping endings. But if i have to choose what I thnk was the best, as a show Roronin Kenshin the best action anime ever, and Eureka 7 very good love story( my favorite), as a movie Prenssice Mononoke, and Samurai X Trust & Betrayal. That what I believe are in deed the best so far.

It is and will forever be Cowboy Bebop. It brought a new style and coolness that any other anime never did. It stood out from all the rest. An awesome leading man, a sexy sassy woman with her own attitude, a fatherly like retired police officer, a ditzy but genius hacker, and of course: Ein. It's an anime that like no other that i have seen and probally will ever see imitated again. Samurai Champloo did try to be like it on account that it was made by the same creator as Bebop. But it still doesnt hold a candle.
and to add this as something personal. Drawn Together? Family Guy? Beavis & Butthead? What part of "best anime" didnt you understand? Apparently not the "anime" part.

Cowboy Bepop, Outlaw Star, Naruto, and NANA. These four anime are the best I've ever seen. The stories are either very deep and complicated or very entertaining. The characters are all interesting and cool. There are countless other anime I love but these are my favorite.

Ouran High School Host Club is one of them. (I can't really decide which one I should place as no. 1). Just because it manages to be very smart and very witty, and also maintain a mature plot structure, despite the general impression of a silly and rather scattered atmosphere. Because it pushes the limits of creativity to a an almost invisible edge, while managing to maintain an overall linked flow of elements. It's natural, mature and funny...
What more can I say? I'm an otaku.

Princess Mononoke. It's a good story, with lots of wonderful characters who are multi-dimensional. There's drama and humor, the music is wonderful, and a lot of really good actors did the voice work on it. The scene when the forest god gets his head back and everything in the landscape changes is so moving.
I own a copy of this film and loan it to friends regularly. Whenever somebody really likes it, I know we're going to be very compatible on a lot of things!

Naruto rocks, especially Shikamaru and Sasuke;
Fullmetal Alchemist does, too. Edward is so awesome (and cute).
One Piece is cool. Especially Sanji and Zolo.
Fruits Basket is...coolio confusio. Kyo is the best.
(I am borrowing my friend's account to answer this. He is a boy, but I am a girl.)

DEFINITELY Azumanga-Daioh, Love Hina, and Martian Successor Nadesico.
I love Azumanga and Love Hina because they have really loveable and cute characters, awesome, weird storylines, and just generally drawn in a good writing style.
I like Nadesico mainly because of the storyline. Very thoughtful.
