Well, let me put it in simple terms. We are predicting the future on current technology, either far overestimating where we'd be or quite the contrary.
Back in the 60's, there were books out there and sci-fi films of what human civilization would have reached by the year 2000. No joke, they simply believed we'd be colonizing the moon by then, driving around hovercrafts and spaceships going in and out of earth like cars. As you can tell we are far far far from that.
What if in the next 5 years we discovered something that would boost technology research rate by tenfold? That would surely mess up our calculations if I gave you one now.
What if a massive war broke out in 15 years time between say China and the US? One that would devastate the world and make places inhabitable for the next millenia, setting things back to the stone age on certain parts of the world?
I think you get the picture now =]

completely destroyed or at least on the brink of it. The war for oil will finally start and the nukes will come out. The world will be thrown back into the dark ages, except with radiation and really powerful guns.
