Although I love horror movies (old ones moreso than new, because they seem to think that guts and blood are enough) I don't really have a favourite. I really like the original House on Haunted Hill and Horror Hotel with Vincent Price and Christopher Lee respectively.

Halloween the original with Jamie Lee Curtis. It was really the first film I watched as a kid.Yes I watched all the Amityvilles and love them too.But the scene in Halloween when she is in the cupboard with the coathangers gets me every time.classic films.

I'd have to say it's still "The exorcist" There just hasn't been a movie of its caliber since.
Also the Japanese original version of "The Ring" much more minimal than the Hollywood version, because nothing is more scary than imagining something rather than being shown it.

It's not my favorite, but The Excorsist is the scariest movie I've ever seen. And when they did the remake when she crawled down the stairs on her back, it blew my mind all over again. Creepy.

The last 3 Saw movies where so sick and twisted it raises the bar on gore and horror.I went to see the 3rd Saw yesterday and it was morbid, i cant wait to see what happens in the next one.I wish i would of went opening night to see how many people got sick or walked out.

I have SO many scary movie faves, but if I had to choose one, it would be The Ring, because I went knowing NOTHING about it, and it was just so different and interesting at the time.

I'm also a sucker for the Saw movies, but you only asked for one. . . . .
