If it's a Nokia you can get a download code from the internet for a about £3.00
If not go to your local market and it's about £15
Usually done there and then

I had the same problem last year - only I wanted to put in an O2 sim. Any vodafone shop will unlock your phone for you. If your contract has expired they will unlock it for free, however, if your contract has not expired it will cost (from memory) £10 - £15

As long as it's a GSM phone your looking to put the sim card in (a phone that comes with a sim card) then just take it to an off the wall phone store and they'll be able to unlock it for you.
Now if the phone is CDMA then you won't be able to use a sim card, since CDMA phones don't use sim cards in the first place.

Simply call your existing network and tell them you want to switch. Your provider will give a code. Simply type it into your phone. A couple of seconds later, your phone will be unlocked and ready to go!
You can also keep your current number. Just ask your current service provider for your Port Authorisation Code (PAC). This is a code that lets you transfer from one network to another.
Then either call or pop into virgin and the staff will help you sort the rest out!

brandonjb2004 is wrong. Virgin use sim cards just like all other mobile service providers.
I am on virgin mobile prepay and have a sim card in my phone.
Not sure what his uncle's got but I'd be very surprised to find any mobile phone that didn't contain a sim.
(Have you checked under the battery???)

even if you do unlock your phone you will NOT be able to use virgin service since they do not use SIM cards, you would have to buy a virgin mobile phone
