The US involvement started while protecting Americans when our ship the Maine was blown to bits and 260 lives were taken. In 1969 they claimed it was not a bomb but a faulty boiler aboard the ship. To this day there are reasons to believe sabotage.
After the war the treaty was signed in France and we gained Cuba, Philipines,Puerto Rico,the Island of Guam, the Mariana Islands and the Ladrones as well. However Puerto Rico still refuses to become a state of our Union. Guam is a possession and the other Islands as well. And the Philipines, has their own government along with Cuba as you know. We actually only gained access to build and civilize and possess only what we have paid for.
