I woke up the other night at 1:00am out of a dead sleep. I COuld hardly get a breath in and I was very hot. It felt like a could feel my pulse in my head. I thought I was going to die. I eventually fell asleep on the couch, but what would have caused this? This has happened one other time about a year ago. I'm healthy.

sounds like either a panic attack or sleep apnea (holding your breath while sleeping) both of which are very common

sleep apnea tends to happen more frequently than once a year but can be very dangerous if it continues or gets worse in a person that isn't treated for it.

panic attacks are common as well-nightmares can sometimes trigger them during sleep.

symptoms of a panic attack are:

-palpitations (racing heart)
-overwhelming feeling of panic or feeling like you are going to die
-shortness of breath
-chest pain or tightness
-sweating
-dizziness or faintness

if you have any of those symptoms-best thing to do is lie down in a comfortable, dark, quiet room. place a cool washcloth on your forehead and focus on taking slow, deep breaths (this will help slow your heartrate down). get something cool to drink and take small, frequent sips. remain lying down until you fall asleep or feel calm enough to get back up.

if this happens again in the near future-make an appt with your family dr. there are medications that can be given at night to help you sleep and ward off the panic attacks and there are also medications and methods to treat sleep apnea if you have it.

good luck

It sounds like a panic attack. Lots of people get them in the night like that. I used to. Meds for 2 years, and I never get them at all anymore.

I only ever woke up like that once & that was because I was dreaming that I was drowning... You could have just been having a bad dream and not been able to remember it.
I wouldn't worry unless it becomes a regular occurrence.
