A .sys file is a short for a system configuration file.
It can be found in the following path in a Windows OS : C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers .
The system file basically has the driver information for a particular hardware or a software.

Also sys files are created when an windows XP or a 2K3 OS is set to hibernate in which case the hiberfil.sys saves a snapshot of the present state of the PC so that when it comes out of hibernation it is restored to its previous state.

One more place where sys files are used are in mobile operating systems such as Symbian or Java wherein games and other applications can be installled thru the sys file.
