Granite, quartz, or basalt are the safest. Don't use limestone, it will dissolve and harden the water. Don't bother with rocks from aquarium stores; they cost a fortune. You can generally pick up rocks yourself anywhere.

Use only aquarium-safe rocks sold in a reliable pet store or aquarium dealer. Not all rocks can be used in a fish tank. Some might be harmful and even fatal to fish, especially limestones.

At any rate, wash really well all rocks, stones, and gravel before use. The finer your substrate, the better for your fish.

try some that u can get at the stream or river.or any hard rock so that it wont dissolve in the water like limestone.u can also get it at any pet store.i put some pebbles that i took from a stream in my tank.they look quite fine n doesnt cost me a thing.

8 in the corner posted a response to a similar question the other day. I've heard this before, pour some vinegar on it, if it bubbles, don't use it. Found it, it's the first answer.
