Many reason can be attributed to cough, from allergy to gastric disorder and even cooking smoke or smell.
1. Get a air purifier, and spend most of the time in that room.
2. Eat small meals 6 to 10 time a day.
3. Meals should be mild easy to digest and soft.
4. If it is caused by throat irritation eat a banana, or soft bread without crust, it will clean the throat.
5 Drink water slowly to clear the throat or keep it wet.
6. Most doctors use the info that you give to them so it is up to you to see what is causing it. This means keeping a good record. It may even take investigating on your part.
7. Ware a dust mask.
The above will help because coughing causes throat irritation.
She will need more energy once the baby is born so just start investigating the cause, you can only find it and remove the cause.
Have doctor perform certain tests if it was not performed or was performed long time a go.

Im not sure the exact situation of your wife but a couple months ago (I wasnt pregnant by the way) I randomly got severe coughs that mostly affected me in the morning and right before I went to sleep and it lasted for like a week and a half. For some reason they would be worse when I lied down so I had to sleep sitting up and hot tea with honey and/or lemon would usually help. I also would eat this japanese candy with aloe vera (kinda like what they put in lotion but its safe) and it would soothe my throat. That worked way better than cough drops. Hope that helped although I am no doctor.

Nothing over the counter is safe for the baby except throat spray & cough drops (in moderation) Has she dried using a coolmist humidifer? Those really helped me. Also she may have bronchitis which is what it sounds like to me, if she has not yet been checked for it, make sure she is...soon.

Yes, it is dangerous to be taking in meds at this time , especially cough meds. Was she able to have an ultrasound? What about natural meds, like crushing ginger and boiling it and drinking the liquid concoction that come from it. Mix a Little sugar to sweeten. This is a temporary remedy however, you need to see another obstetrician.
