Nothing. Tell him you're sorry for his loss. Then always be there to just listen. When someone dies the person hears all the same things from everyone... they don't wanna listen, they want to cry and remember the person that passed away. Your job is to always be there listening and passing the tissues.

My dad passed away with cancer in January this year. It was an extremely hard time but the attention and affection from friends was so overwhelming that it was extremely comforting.
All you have to do is simply be with them. A good friend doesn't need words. Just listen. Let him know that it's alright to talk, give him a hug.
When my dad passed away, I was most grateful to my closest friends who just remained there for the longest hours, sometimes not saying much at all but simply sharing the pain with me. I'm sure that's what your friend would want.

You simply say something like, "I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your _________. If you'd like to talk or if there's anything I'm able to do, let me know." Just leave it at that. The person will respond or maybe not. It doesn't have to be a long drawn out discussion, just one friend supporting another.

I personally would say, "I'm sure you miss him or her a lot." And when I do that, I'll hold this person in my arms, or put my arm around his or her shoulder. Just be close to the person, so s/he knows that I care. At times I cry with the person too.

A good start would be just to let him know that you sympathize and grieve with him and to be there for him in case he needs you.
Simply listening does more good than lofty words ever could.

Simply say you're sorry and ask if there is anything you can do for them. Most people worry too much about this situation.
Just an expression of concern is all that is required.....
