If you're not honest with yourself, how can you be honest with other people? Honesty is the best policy, to use an old cliche, but still something to live by. While sometimes being honest might be hurtful to yourself and those you care about, is is still better to be honest than risk lying to yourself or others.

Lying to yourself only leads to denial (as you've noted) and only makes you start living in a make believe world that doesn't exist - and when the real world comes knocking, if you've retreated too far - you can't get out of it.

Be honest to yourself and those around you - it'll make you feel better about yourself, give you a chance to realize whether or not you've been making mistakes, and help you to think of ways to make your life and the lives of those near to you better in the end.

It is just easier to live in denial, but I can be honest with myself from time to time. Like the time I finally realized that I was a good artist, but not good enough to make a living at it or be a teacher of it. I faced that facts and realized I am better at history and that is what I told myself to go back to school for. Which is what I am doing in January.

Honesty is overrated.
It is better to be kind to yourself. When you are trying something new, like for example trying out to catch a baseball. You know you look foolish and you will probably run , flail your arms , attempt to catch , and it will fall through your fingers.
So- what do you say to yourself?
"Aw ,cmon its only a stupid fly ball. "You can do it, go ahead and try"

If you are entirely honest all the time, you would be a tyrant and a jerk, insensitive and mean.

And that is the honest truth.
PS. By the way, the correct word is not denial, There is such a thing as the burden of truth. You dont want to deny the truth now, you simply want a better truth, and that involves a heck of a lot of work.

Are the people who think they are Completely honest with themselves just living in Complete denial, and are the ones who claim to be living in denial, the only ones who are truly honest with themselves?
How would one know??
Honestly, I try to be honest with myself, but sometimes it's hard to know the truth, so it's hard to tell it!!

Yes I am. I know who I am better than anyone else. It has always been my motto "Be true to my self and be the best I can be to the best of my ability". When I don't live up to the standards I have set for myself I get physically sick and I mean so sick that I throw up. If I do live in denial it would have to be in my subconscious. I like to wake up each day and be able to say, "I love life".
