Back in the 60's and 70's hitchinking was a fairly common way to get around. I don't know if there was more or less danger back then or just less media coverage. In this day I would neither hitchhike nor pickup someone who is. I generally won't even stop to assist someone broken down on the side of the rode, although I do call 911 so that I know some assistance is on the way. It's a real shame what society has become.

didja ever see that movie the hitcher, with Rutger Hauer? Id say picking up a hitchiker could get you into more trouble. Or not

That's a good question. I don't know which would be worse. They'd be pretty close.
