Griffin's expectation fulfilment theory of dreams states that:
1. Dreams are metaphorical translations of waking expectations.
2. Expectations which cause emotional arousal that is not acted upon during the day to quell the arousal, become dreams during sleep.
3. Dreaming deactivates that emotional arousal by completing the expectation pattern metaphorically, freeing the brain to respond afresh to each new day.

Why do we live? What's the purpose of our lives?
I think that the purpose of dreaming is the same as the purpose of our lives. Sometimes I have really great, interesting days, sometimes boring or even unpleasant ones. Same with dreams. Some days we learn new things that change our lives. Sometimes we have dreams that change our lives. Figure out what the purpose of existence is (no small task, I know) and then you will know the purpose of dreams.

Revelation 20:12
Because there is a "story" which every man tells every day about the life that he (we) live. It is told individually on a personal level in a place of impossible possibliites. That place is the "other life" we live... And so we dream....
Because we go there every night... We leave the detailed relationships that we have kept with each other in our own words about what life means to us.. what life is doing to us.. what we are doing with it...... and so we dream......
Because someone is keeping a record (Book of Life) of what we are doing with the allotted time while we are here.... and so we dream.....
Because at the end of all the pages, chapters, and events of our lives... when we have turned that last page, and our book is closed..... it is turned over to the "Keeper of the Book of Life".....
If that "book" (story of your life) is worthy to be saved and read again, then it will be put in that Great Anthology called by name, the Book of Life......
Because it is the only communication within (Luke 17:21)..... with God..... It is the place (Kingdom of God).......
Because it is the great mystery which is hidden.... In the flesh (Genesis 2:7)........ Without it, man cannot think or reason... without it, there are no dreams because thoughts perish.... But, this thing, is the reason we dream.....
See Job 33:14........

The truth is that we really don't know why we dream, there are many theories though. That is why if you read a dream interpretation book the meaning that it gives you may not make sense.

We dream in order to understand the little problems that we go through everyday (depending on how big your problems are). In any case normally solving your dreams will make your day better. At least thats how it is with me.

According to the bible, dreams have no meaning. In science class I learned that dreams are only ways that your brain uses to explain what it went through during the day.

No one knows why we dream, but I think it sometimes helps us deal with things we have in our subconscious.
