It is a written test first. Then the learners permit is issued so you can practice with another driver in the vehicle you are wanting to drive. Then it is a road test. No school is involved, just the DMV. If you want to get a driving job with a larger company, they will offer truck driving school and pay your way, BUT you will be under a contract to stay employed with them for a year or until schooling is repaid. It is hard to land a job with out any experience, unless you are under you own authority(owner/operator). Most companies want 3 years verifiable experience. Good luck. There is a demand for GOOD drivers!

Study for the permit, get the permit. Apply at a CDL driving school, depends on which Class (A, B,C). Class A takes about a month to do, if you do day classes! Good luck!

you can go to a public college if they offer the course or you can just go down to your local DMV and they can get you started with a driver book and written test. You will have to bring your own truck to do the driver test. I'm not sure on the testing fees but they are between 250.00 - 500.00 depending on your class/hazmat/tanker endorsements.
Or you can go through a program that some OTR companies offer like this one in the link below: They have stipulations so please make sure to read the fine print before signing on!
