1979 Basketball season. I went to an away game and on the way back we crossed a bridge that went through a park in Oregon outside of Lebanon. On both sides of the bridge next to the river below us were hundreds of KKK men. All dressed in white with pointed hats and black eyes. I was 13 and scared to death. The driver told us to duck and she drove very very fast through the park to the other side and away from them. I peaked. I am 40 now and it is still a very real memory.

The are not anywehre near as active as they once were...but they pop out from under their rocks every once in a while. Personally I never understood how a group that claims to be white supremist can follow a religion founded in the Middle East by the followers of a Jewish man. They haven't been a group capable of doing much since the 70's. That's when the last of the leaders with any actual inteligence was around. While I never agreed with any of their ideas, at least back then they acually had formulated ideas based in something other than simple racial bigotry. Back then their bigotry was born from their understanding (flawed though it was) of social and economic influences, biblical verse and misinterpreted scientific theory, and they could explain it logically. Now their bigotry is just that...with no rhyme or reason beyond racial hatred. Hopefully, in a couple more generations they will disappear alltogether, and good riddance I say...

The KKK as such is much smaller than it was 20-some years ago, but it still exists. Actually there are a number of independent Klan organizations which rarely have much influence beyond the local level. Unfortunately an assortment of other white supremacist, neo-Nazi and hate groups have developed to take up at least some of the slack.

I'm sure in some small towns the KKK is still pretty active.

There's nothing you can do about people like that as long as their mind is made up. They are not open to debate, reason or intelligent conversation.
They are brainwashed by racism. Your best option is to stay clear of them. I'm white and I wouldn't go near those idiots.

The bible teaches to stay away from people who have no wisdom in them. I think we can safely say that the KKK would fall under that category.

Just because the laws change doesn't mean people's attitudes change, of course the KKK are still going strong.
