I know this sounds weird, but my interest is purely scientific: I have noticed that female passengers almost always leave the car's seatbelt in a humongous tangle when getting out of the car. I'm not saying it annoys me, because I'm not that kind of guy. But it has me baffled - why do you do that? It must be on purpose, because it takes a lot to get them this messed up. I couldn't do it if I tried. Can you tell me, what do you think when you leave the car? Is the seatbelt something you feel especially negative about? Do you feel "chained down" by it and relish the escape? Or is it simply something you couldn't care less about?
I always think of my seatbelt as the thing that may, one day, stand between me and the wheelchair, and I treat it with a certain "keep it in good order and get it ready for the next mission" type attitude. What's with the abandon, I'd really like to know...?

1. Don't call women/girls "females". That's more for animals.
2. The seatbelt thing - they probably just don't care about it. If you think about it the seatbelt pretty much works whether it was left in a mess or not, as long as someone makes sure its "all back" before locking it. There's no big psychological thing behind it.
There is the chance, though, that you are someone who believes if you keep everything all in order and the way it should be you will have the power to keep yourself protected from all harm. This is a personality type of many young men, while many young women may have a broader view of things. It is, of course, wise to wear your seatbelt; and it is probably wise to try to keep it in good shape; but I can tell you, there is a point where all the trying to keep oneself safe in the world doesn't count.
I was in an accident where the driver had a seatbelt on (not because it was the "thing" at the time but because she liked the image of being careful and smart. The other passenger and I didn't bother. The driver wasn't just put in a wheelchair. She was killed. I learned the hard way that you can be as careful as you can be, but sometimes in this world it just doesn't make any difference.
I'm not knocking you for being careful, but no matter how careful you try to be you aren't the captain of this mission. Whether or not they're women or guys, maybe the "abandon" some of them seem to have has something to do with something they're learned.

I agree with Starwood that seatbelts go back in place when removed. I do wear one always. When one is getting out of the car I don't think much attention is given to how the seat belt looks since it returns but I do tend to check my car before leavng it anyway. Having said that though car maintainance is always kept up and kept clean. Although you say it doesn't annoy you, it obviously bothers you, but I think you are reading too much into it too.

Hmm, I always make sure my seatbelt is fixed properly for the next time and I do not like the messy look. Maybe I am weird!

You know, I have never left a seat belt in the condition you describe. I have never seen another woman of any age leave a seat belt in that condition. Is this something you observed in most women or just a small group?

I like Lemon Tea's answer.
Personally, I can't stand the things. The sooner I have it off the better. I fling it off for dear life and yes it does get tangled up, frequently.
I never considered it a manners issue, just a quirk of mine. I know they (potentially/statistically) save lives, but I HATE them.

Well here in Canada we get a fine if we do not wear our seat belt and so it is rarely tangled up. I'm a woman and mine is never tangled.

Maybe your piece of carp car has a terrible retractor mechanism. My car is fine. I'm quite careless, and whenever I get back in the car, it's always nice and firm, right up in the slot, waiting for me.
