I've heard lawyers generally have to work an exorbitant amount of hours but are there any jobs available that don't require this time commitment?

of course, it depends on your employer and if they can work with your schedule

Corporate in-house legal is easy going, at least at the right company.

Try federal government lawyer at one of many agencies (SEC is hiring). Nice thing about a powerful agency like SEC is that you have so much leverage, so much power, that companies can't push you around & shove tough deadlines down your throat. YOU set the pace because YOU have the power. (Must be nice to sit with the tables turned around like this). Try www.sec.gov, they list their job openings.

I think legal work for a state/municipality would be even more easygoing.

Or go into law practice for yourself. If the workload is more than you care for, then you just refer cases to other lawyers. I have acquaintances with their own firms & they're very happy and they set the pace.

For the easiest legal career possible, become a law professor.
