the republican party is called GOP, short for "Grand Old Party". This label goes back to the days of the Civil War. The DEM label is just an abbreviation of the Democratic party.

Americans are obsessed with nicknames. I'm surprised no one tried to add a "Y" on the end.

For many Republicans, GOP stands for:

Grand old Party
Gallant old Party
God's own Party
Get out and Push

For other Republicans LIKE ME it's:

Government of the People

The latter description is most closely associated with the widely held republican philosophy that the people can best govern themselves.

All have been used by Republicans for many years, but for the future of the party, I suggest we stick with one of the final two.

As for "Dems", maybe they haven't come up with anything more original. Maybe they don't care. You pick.

The Democrats don't have cool old school names like the Republicans. GOP is kind of like the political version of the throwback jersey.

In different words, the celebration moved to the left, and he and his southern Democrats would quickly turn Republican. It replaced into Nixon's 'Southern attitude' that captured the South from the populists that elected Rosevelt to the conservatives (ever considering). The republicans grew to become the celebration of segregation and conflict. The celebration has basically been a farce considering then: electing human beings in line with distractions like gay marrige, gun administration, abortion, states's rights, speeches based no jokes and quips quite of subject concerns -- all whilst our u . s . falls aside.
