I have 12+ years of IT skills and leadership. I have had my fill and really want to teach...possibly history. I hear there is a shortage of teachers but I can't figure out the path to get there. This is for the Denver, Colorado area.

There usually isn't a shortage of History teachers...the shortages are normally Math, Science, Special Education and sometimes Reading. I would go to the Department of Education for your county. They usually have programs where if you already have a B.A. degree, all you need to do is take some education courses and pass a subject area exam. They are called "career-switchers" programs. ,,,,,,, are you sure you want to do this? I bet you have a cushy job and getting paid pretty well. Teaching is VERY hard work. I know because I am a high school teacher. My husband is in IT. He works 40 hours a week and makes twice what I do, while I am under a lot of stress and work 60 hours a week!

Check out some of the charter schools in your area. CO is a major center of this movement. These schools many times have a vocational or professional piece to their curriculum. IT is a hot career field so you shouldn't have a major amount of difficulty finding a vocational ed position.

You can always teach IT to others. Actually, it's the person with real hands-on experience who is the most practical, best teacher of a particular field.
