Well, she could self publish. One of the best sites to get started is LuLu.com. They will print your book for a fee and sell it on their web site. You retain all of your rights and set the prices. It is a great place to get started for anyone who needs to publish and/or sell any type of media.

A copy of Writer's Market 2007 would be helpful. It features a comprehensive list of agents and publishers, what genres they represent, and their submission guidelines. Each agent and publisher will have varying submission guidelines. You need to follow them precisely in order to be considered. If she can't afford a copy of the latest edition, she may be able to find an older edition in your local library.

She will most likely need an agent because many publishers will not accept unagented or unsolicited work. Finding a reputable agent can be tough too because most prefer you to have some type of publishing credentials. And, a book published by a vanity press will not count unless you have managed to sell an astounding number of copies!

A vanity press is a publisher who charges you fees to publish your book, rather than them pay you. She should stay away from such publishers unless she is just doing it for fun or has a degree and proven success in marketing.

Also, no reputable agent will try to charge her a submission, reading, or representation fee! If they do, they are trying to scam her. Legitimate agents make money by selling your book, not charging ridiculous fees! A reputable agent should be a member of the Association of Author’s Representatives. Agents earn money by taking a percentage of the royalites once the book has been sold to a publisher. This is money well spent because an author's interests and the agent's interests coincide. They will protect your rights, and the best deal for you is the best deal for them!

Your friend might want to check out http://www.absolutewrite.com/

It is a writing community with helpful articles that may be of interest to her. Somewhere on there is an article on how to write effective queries to agents. There is also a message board where she can ask questions and receive answers by experienced writers. Here is a link to the forums:http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/

Good luck!

I would recommend self-publishing. I self-published a book of poetry through http://www.lulu.com/ (you don’t need an agent for self-publishing)
Lulu is completely free and very easy to use. You can then buy a global distribution, or ISBN, which will put your book on Barnes and noble, borders, Amazon.... I really like lulu, I think they are great. They also offer a great customer service if you get stuck. Once published with them, you automatically get the copyright, and you keep all rights to it. You can have books printed in b/w or colour, hardback or soft back, and in a variety of sizes.
If you think they are too good to be true (which was my original opinion) you can view my book at http://www.lulu.com/dchooper
Hope this helps. Good luck with your writing.
For any more information about Lulu you can contact me at forensic_dreamer@hotmail.com (if you do contact me, put Lulu in the subject line, or I might report as Spam)
Cheers, Deanna.

Here is an excellent article regarding this matter:

Some of the advice reads that if it's their first novel, go directly to a publisher because many agents are quite shady - in it just for the money.

Good luck!
