I don't know if you are familiar with George Carlin, but he said something once that struck me as profound. He's crude, but he had a moment of enlightement. He said that it's not "homelessness" when you are living on the streets---that's "houselessness".To me a home is where your heart is, where the ones you love the most are...if a person is homeless, I think that they are a very lonely person.

Usually it means people who have no place to go and no address.

Some people live outside, while people like mothers with children may stay with other relatives or sleep in a car.

Usually it is people who have had a place they could call home and lost it.

The 25-year-old who goes back to live with parents after graduating college isn't homeless because his parents have made their home his. I suppose as long as parents have "established" that a grown child is welcome to call their home his own home that grown child wouldn't be considered homeless unless he refused to go there and stayed with someone else on a temporary basis.

Probably any adult who does not have an apartment or house either by himself or shared with someone and both names on the paperwork, and who has not made some verbal agreement with someone like relatives that he/she will live in their home and call it his/her own, would be homeless.
