There are 300 million Americans. They range from prudish/religious fanatics to prostitutes, and everything in between.

No; for the most part, the sex life of an average person is pretty boring. No making out on the subway trains, no "love in an elevator"... We wait around for the right person, sometimes months between encounters. Then we date that person for a month or so (sometimes more, sometimes less), and if we think we can trust him/her, then we have sex with them. If the relationship lasts more than a year, we're lucky, and start thinking about the long-term. But I don't know any people my age (I'm 30) who go home with a different person every Saturday night, and can't even remember the guy's name come Monday... I had 8 different lovers before I met my husband, in the time I lost my virginity to the night I first slept w/ my hubby. That was over a period of 6 years, and 6 of those were relationships that lasted at least 5 months. Hardly "Hollywood"...

Yes, dear friend, and we also make exciting whoopie while an entire orchestra plays for our benefit.... Please remember that this is a culture that is SOOOOOOOOO uptight, our founding forefathers were the PURITANS, who left England because no one over THERE could tolerate HOW uptight they were....
The point is that WHILE we are an uptight culture with regard to inappropriate language in music and inappropriate images in films that we have to rate and label everything to death, we let the little planet called Hollywood come up with an inexhaustible variation of all the things we're probably too uptight to do in real life...
Also, don't forget that as a culture, we have a great deal more information and services than most countries with regard to AIDS and other STD's... and its just plain common sense to know the person you're going to sleep with because its much HEALTHIER that way....
The truth is, Americans have as much hollywood sex as often as they also leave their front door unlocked (AS IF!!) and as often as they brush their teeth without rinsing with water or spitting.... you can find these and other incredibly lame and ridiculous hyperboles in any hollywood film --- oscar material or B, C, X, Z movies .... =)

Hollywood does blow things way out of proportion. For example, I have a very outgoing, sex at the drop of a hat type friend in California who was in a three way for the first time recently. It is probably the craziest thing he's done or will ever do in his life, sexually. But now he says he is worried about AIDS and other diseases because-all double-standards aside-he claims the girl was a 'filthy [prostitute]'. I am worried about him.
So you see, even with the most promiscuous people are worried about THE AIDS. We've gotten over the fact that nukes could obliterate us at any moment but we haven't gotten over AIDS. That is unacceptable to me. Gone are the peace-love-dope good ole' days of syphilis or gonorrhea, when it was still relatively safe to have sex because worst case scenario was you got a little itch and penicillin actually *worked*.
It is a dangerous, mean world now, and sex is dangerous.
If AIDS doesn't kill you (and *badly* i might add) the right wing majority will take away abortion and make it so that a girl can have her life ruined by rape or a mistake early in her life, and bring damned opportunity upon her unfortunate, untimely and ultimately unwanted child.
Sorry for the doom and gloom. And the sorta-preachiness.
Most people do this and it's really good advice: get a good, stable boyfriend/girlfriend and make them feel sexy. Be good to them, make them feel right and help them in life. They should and often do reward you with lots of sex with them. Don't ever take the time you have together for granted. And use condoms until the two of you feel it's right not to use them anymore.

No, I am 53 years old and I have never known anyone who jumps in bed with as many people as they show on TV and in the movies. In this day and time more people are cautious about who they sleep with. In the 70's, it was a different culture and nobody had ever heard of AIDS and not too many people in small town America had ever had or heard of STD's. So, in the 70's we did sleep with lots of people, but still single people, young people, not married men and women. America is not the hot bed of sex that the movies makes it seem to be. Maybe in Hollywood, but not in the rest of America.

movies go over board about everything, sex, violence, love, hate... to portray an event that people want to watch, you have to make it interesting to the viewer. people are interested in seeing about romance and sex but generally don't just meet a stranger in a bar and hop in the sack, there are a lot of people like that, but it's not hte standard in america. just because we're fat and stupid doesn't mean we're sluts .
