Large book, novel of 900 plus pages. No pictures, all print. Do I need specialized software? If so, what?

You can use OpenOffice.org Writer, it can print direct to PDF and open Microsoft .doc documents. If you're rich you can buy Adobe Acrobat. I have had also good luck with a free PDF maker that I found on download.com, it just shows up in the print menu of Windows and you can print directly to a file.
