Liberals and Conservatives think about the world differently. I would say the main difference between their outlooks is that Conservatives tend to be more realistic and would rather operate independently from anyone else, while Liberals are more idealistic and open to possibilities from other sources.
These are kind generalizations. Take them anyway you like.
To me, a Liberal, I see most Conservatives as selfish and closed-minded. And I have heard Conservative friends describe us Liberals as amoral Communists. It's all your outlook on life and the world around you.
Traditionally, the difference is that Liberals are the force of change and Conservatives represent the return to the values of the past.
The best way I can put it is that Conservatives are perpetually going to go extinct, while Liberals are perpetually evolving away. These two forces keep us firmly planted in the present, making sure, I guess that humans never live up to their full potential or never die off like the dinosaur. Kind of sad when you look at it this way, I know, but there it is.

Generally the Democrats are in favor of gun control, women's right to choose, and help represent minorities.
Generally the Republicans are against gun control and abortion. They want tax cuts (which mostly help the rich) and want to stay the course in Iraq.

Well basically their platforms are as follows: the democrats are for small business and the advancement of minorities, and Republicans are for corporate America, traditional families and marriages, and conservative issues
*Before (before/after civil War) Democrats involved KKK/against civil rights for Blacks and Republicans were for Civil Rights and Minority advancement
