I own 2 russian tortises's and there both about 17 years old now. I love having them around because they are very smart and will actually learn to know who you are. My tortises's are allowed to roam around the house for acouple of hours a day for exercise and usually when there out there chasing each other or following me around the house begging for food. These are very smart animals and don't let any one tell you different. There housing is the hardiest part for them. I have 2 housed in a 150 gallon tank in the winter months then they are moved outside and enclosure that measures 8 feet x 12 feet to give them the natural sun and outdoor sounds and smells you can't get from having them indoors. My turtles show affection when there out if I am sitting on the floor they try to climb all over me because they are really good climbers and diggers. So good luck. Hope this help's you

Ignore the previous posts, the person is asking about a tortoise not a turtle. If you put a tortoise in water it will almost certainly drown as they are terrestrial reptiles. Anyhow, if you want something to cuddle dont consider a tortoise in fact dont consider a reptile for that matter. Although tortoises for the most part are docile, tortoises typically arent of a social nature in the same way that a dog or cat is. Its just the nature of tortoises, they are solitary dwellers, its why you dont ever hear expressions like "roving packs of wild tortoises", or "herds of tortoises".
The other thing you should consider about tortoises is that they are long term pets, as in long term, consider that some tortoises can live upwards of 150 years old. Also, tortoises, depending on the species require a lot of care(and by care I dont mean hugs and kisses, attention to food, vitamins, lighting, heating etccc have to be considered).
If you want something exotic that is somewhat willing to socialize with you, and doesnt have the potential to live to 150, get a ferret or a hedgehog, or any other mammal for that matter, but stay away from reptiles until you are more mature.

Good pets? Yes!

EASY pets? NO!

Cuddly, 'play with' pets? No.

Tortoises are awkward pets for most people. They need:
- pretty large spaces (a single small tortoise can need about 4'x8')
- high temps (most torts like about 90 degrees)
- controlled humidity (this is tough- some species need almost no humidity, others need almost 100% humidity. Almost ALL species need a specific, controlled humidity.)
- proper lighting with UV elements
- well-planned diet, appropriate for the species. For example, some species need barely any protein, others need as much as 10% of the diet in proteins.

Another awkward point is that if properly cared for, most tortoises can easily live 50 years. Imagine a pet you can hand down through generations! Kids and grandkids will come and go, and the family tortoise will still be there!

I used to have a turtle and honestly, cuddling is kind of hard to do with them, but they are interesting creatures, especially at feeding times. My turtle learned its name, which was neat, so whenever I'd call him (could have been a her, too, for that matter), he/she would raise its head and look around.

Not sure what size tortoise you want to get, but if it's small, you can put it in a fish aquarium. Mine was in a 20-gal aquarium, until he got bigger but for the time being, he managed just fine. Had just enough water for him to swim around in and placed a sturdy stick and rocks for him to sun on. He seemed happy. You will need to clean the tank probably about once a week. I think I probably cleaned mine 2, 3 times a month. I don't remember. It's been a long time ago.

i do no longer think of so. i think of this because of the fact I relatively have never individually seen any and we've not have been given any community tortises so if every person enable them to loose it ought to in all probability do alot of harm. i think of the main suitable success is a turtle, the two an prolonged or short necked. Sorry, I choose that they had them too. Matt

Not the best pet to cuddle and they do not give affection, you would be better off with a gold fish. they also tend to out live you and they are rather boring, if you are buying one check for little insects like crabs on them, as if they have these tiny crabs walk away.

they're not noisy or hard to clean. but they can't be cuddled the way a fluffy chow chow or shih tzu can. :) why not get a guinea pig or an albino burmese puthon?
