I'd like to quote the last paragraph from "The Plague" translated by Stuart Gilbert;
And, indeed, as he listened to the cries of joy rising from the town, Rieux remembered that such joy is always imperiled. He knew what those jubilant crowds did not know but could have learned from books: that the plague bacillus never dies or disappears for good; that it can lie dormant for years and years in furniture and linen chests; that it bides its time in bedrooms, cellars, trunks, and bookshelves; and that perhaps the day would come when, for the bane and the enlightening of men, it would rouse up its rats again and send them forth to die in a happy city.

My mother died yesterday, or was it the day before yesterday? The letter from the nursing home read, yada yada Why should I cry about my mother dying? I hadn't seen her for several years, so what's the difference? She could have died six months ago and I wouldn't have known it. Why are these people calling me guilty for a murder I did't commit? That's my bad paraphase of that small 99 page philosophy novel that I read when a Jolly Green Giant Helicopter carried a small mobile home from an Air Craft Carrier and dropped it into the middle of the Jungle area of Vietnam in June of 1969. A mobile home full of books is what it was, and we called it our base camp library. Ten days in the jungle and then we got 5 days off to write our reports and act like we were back at stateside when we visited the camp library. Added: (((Jack))) Did you know that Camus got his ideas, for that novel, from his study of the Itallian Mafia and one of their maxims. He traveled from France to Italy and interviewed several Mafioso leaders before he wrote that book back in the 1950s. How would I be privy to that information? Colonel Magazu, one of my commanders, was our chief Engineer in Nam, and his Uncle, in Italy, was one of the Mafia leaders interviewd by Albert Camus. -- small world eh?
