There was an offer made and you accepted. If the party making the offer made a financial investment relying on your verbal agreement, you may be sued for the amount of the investment, plus interest, plus punitive damages.

I don't think you will be sued, however you should be professional and write the company a business letter declining their offer and thanking them for their time. You could say something along the lines of appreciating the offer but having thought it over and feeling that you are not the best fit for the position.
(Unless of course, you have applied for the Mob. In which case you might be in trouble :-) )

I think it depends on the state. But, I doubt they'd waste their time and money in a lawsuit against you for changing your mind. Plus in many states you don't need a reason to quit or to give any amount of notice when quitting, and if you just call it quitting then you might be in the clear.

You're pretty much free of legal obligation, unless you were unknowingly audio or audio/video taped making the verbal acceptance.
And even then, a good attorney can pose challenges that may cause the taped conversation to be inadmissiable in court, rendering it useless.
Savvy dealmakers NEVER rely on spoken word or even handshake agreements: they seal deals "signed in blood".
