Like my husband who is getting some money here soon, and I think he should invest it in realestate (like a small house). I think he is going to spend it on crap, and squander it.
We had 40,000 dollars last year, and nothing to really show for it other than some new furniture and a big screen tv.
How do I make him see the light???

A lot of people want instant gratification instead of thinking about long term, sustainable investment. If somebody playing the lottery won, say... 5 million dollars, what do u think is the first thing they would do with it?
I can bet they're not going to think about investing it. They would probably go out and buy the hottest sportscar or the most expensive designer watch.

U can start by suggesting investment in mutual funds or even stocks. Obviously real estate is where the money's at and it's a good idea. My husband and I are even considering this. Ask him if several yrs from now, how would he like it if he were sowing the fruits of his investments?

A lot of this may have to do with his age - he's not thinking long term about retirement or leaving the workforce for any reason.

You need to make an appointment with a financial planner. If he won't go with you, go by yourself. Find out how much money you're going to need to sustain the lifestyle you want at retirement, and how much you need to save and how to balance savings and investments now for those later years.

Hubby may not be willing to face the fact that the years fly by and he will be faced with not being employable for one reason or another at some point. All men tend to think they are always young studs - even in their 70s and 80s - and that there's always time to make more money for later.

I think you're going to have to be the one who takes the lead on this one. Good luck!!

You can talk to someone until you're blue in the face but when they're not willing to listen, all you accomplish is wasting your breath. He has dollar signs in his eyes and is letting greed get the best of him. One day he'll look back on this and realize how foolish he was. Sometimes people have to learn the hard way.

Wish I knew the answer to that myself. Me and my husband work together. I want more than anything to move into management. He says he wants to also, but he barely works. He doesn't see that, but everyone else does and they make the complaints to me, thinking I can make him see it, but I can't. He is just lazy. He DOES have his moments, though, where he works his butt off. But mostly, you see him wandering or sitting. Can't get him to understand that if he does not apply himself, he will get nowhere, but it will get me somewhere. Out the door after I make management.

You can't......that's something he will have to do on his own. He will probably have to lose something very precious to realize what his priorities need to be (how to handle money etc)....That's what made my husband SEE!!
