I had 3 fish in my tank. One I have had for about a year and a half, the other two I only had for about 3 months. I changed my water and the fish were fine for about 3 1/2 weeks. I didn't over feed them either. When I went to work, all my fish were fine. When I came home they were all dead. My Bottom Dweller (pleco) was floating dead and was a mottled green color. My other two fish were these little blue fish, but don't know what the name of them is. When I found them dead, they were grey and brown and at the bottom of the tank. What can cause fish to die within a few hours for no apparant reason?

I didn't have a heater because it was just a 5 gallon tank and the light kept the water warm enough. I normally had a problem with my water being to warm. I bought fish that liked warmer water.

Nothing dies for no reason...even just old age is a reason!

It's possible the stress of the move killed them, though this wouldn't likely kill all of them. Maybe you didn't put the right amount of water conditioner in. If you used warm tap water, it is also possible that chemicals from your water heater killed them.

I'm not sure how big your tank is, but generally its not a good idea to change all the water at once, but about 25% every so often. You can buy a cheap ammonia indicator and change a portion of the water when it detects build-up.

The other possibility is that you have a roommate or spouse who hates fish!

As to the purple tail it ought to correctly have died and then been eaten via the sucker yet you will possibly normall see the skeleton, inhale got here across many skeletons on my tanks by the years. additionally I lost a fish some years returned, thought the lid replaced into on and could no longer get out additionally checked the clear out, then years later as quickly as I relocated the tank i got here across the fish on the floor in the back of the tank, dried up and crispy!!!! desire desire this enables!

It's so hard to tell why a FISH can die. My fish was behaving WEIRD some time ago, he was floating all bent up at the top of the tank, I thought he wouldn't make it throught the night. But he did and I bought some medicine for his tank to keep him going until I took him to the vet. Turned out it was gas in the intestines. Weird... but I actually got a prescription for him and he is GREAT! Sorry, off topic...

Aww I am SO sorry for your fish, lol I'm just really emotional right now sorry. Any number of things could of happened, chances are either a power outage or crack in some electrical equipment, but you should probably ask someone who works at a pet store, they are the best help.

They didn't die for no reason. You just havn't figured out the reason yet. What are your water parameters, ( ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, etc levels) Was there a power outage while you were gone, or any chance something might have spilled into the tank?

did you wait at least 24 hrs after adding the chemicals to the tap water before adding the fish to the water? it seems like something suddenly harmed them, for them all to die at once. i would think it was either a power outage or chemical related.

It sounds like they may have had some type of infection. I wouldn't put anymore fish in the tank until you do a complete drain and clean.

Where did you get this water from? My idea is that the water had some kind of bacteria in it. Did you recently change the food?

All of those answers are true, but also check your heater, if it is cracked then your fish might have just fried from the initial electric shock.
