In my heart I believe they can, in reality, doctors will tell you around three months old. I believe that my babies loved me as much as I loved them the minute they were born and I always saw a smile.

My best friend's baby was smiling soon after birth. She was even able to take some really great pics of him smiling for the baby announcement!! But on the other hand my 6 week old son is just now starting to smile. I believe that every child is different, but it is definately possible for a baby to smile shortly after birth!

In my opinion, they can. I witnessed smiles from both my sons before we left the hospital after they were born- even have pictures of it! And, if you ever watch a baby sleeping during his dream cycle, you will be able to see them smile and frown, as well as going through other emotions. Experts say that babies don't start to smile until they are around 3 months old, but I think they're refering to a smile as a conscious reaction - like when he smiles as a reaction to seeing your face, or smiling "back" when you smile at him. But... that's just my opinion :o)

10 weeks 8 weeks 5 weeks...I don't think so. My daughter is 3 weeks old and a week ago I was getting full on mouth open, gum showing smiles when I was talking to her. She was looking right at me and smiling huge smiles. I asked the nurse and doctor at my doctors office and they said the little smiles you get that appear for a second are usually gas but when your getting smiles from your baby like I was from mine....they're smiling.

No - it can look as if they are smiling, but it is just wind - but it looks so cute. My baby smiled for sure at around 2 weeks old.

My son didn't smile until he was 6 weeks old. Before that it wasn't a proper smile, he just did it when he was 'relieving' himself.
