There is no nice way to tell anyone to leave you alone. As far as to ask for space and time, that is varied and depends on each person and how close they are to you. If it actually is you needing space and time alone then it should be conveyed as such without personalizing it. If it is because you need to get away from that person then it would be more clear if you explained why to them, unless you didn't respect them or care enough to make it clear. In that case, you would probably make yourself scarse to them and decline all invitations to be in their company. Like I said, it isn't very nice to remove yourself out of someone's life.

Just be honest- in a nice way. It will hurt but that spares you the embarrassment of having to face people later when they find out that you weren't honest about needing some space.

That's a tuffy, I would say... I just feel like I need to be left alone for a little while to think about some things that are clouding my head. I don't really feel like seeing anyone right now but I will let you know when I'm feeling better. If your with someone.. you might want to reasure them that you aren't going to break up with them.

some times there is no nice way to tell people to back off. so just do it. if they are friends they will understand, if not do not worry

Just tell me you care about them and if they care about you allow you to have some time to yourself, that you have some things going on that you need to get straight in your own head.

When somebody is told: I need space, it's usually bad news.
It's not easy though to say it , unless you don't care about that person.
