As a standard mattress set, I will guarantee, Stern's and Foster. You will pay more, but worth the price. I have had now for 18 years and not a complaint nor any signs of needing replacement. I asked a mattress salesman, who was a friend of mine at the time and worked for Sealy and he told me what to check out. Of the new ones, no experience. My son just bought a tempurpedic and loves it, hated the pillows though. He says he will never go back to a standard mattress. Hope this helps.

Stay away from name brands or advertised brands. About 1/3 of your money will be paying for the name and nothing else.
Try to find a vendor that carries Kingsdown, Chattam & Wells or Duxiana. These are great mattresses, the top three mattress makers in the world, actually. You will end up paying a bit more, but the quality is worth it.
I know that Kingsdown offers a Lifetime warranty on some of their lines, I'm pretty sure that Duxiana does to.
I'm pretty sure that Sleepy's carries all of these lines, and you should be near one of those if you live in one of the larger markets. Otherwise, check out their websites for stores.
As for picking out a mattress, use the following criteria:
DO NOT SHOP ON PRICE. Don't even look at them on your first time shopping.
Check out multiple stores. Try out 2 or 3 mattress sets per store, and take notes. Pick your favorite in each store, then go home.
Sleep on it. Let your thoughts gel for a night or a week. Go back, try out your top three mattresses, lay on each for AT LEAST 10 minutes each. Don't feel shy. Your patience will be rewarded in the end.
Don't get a super firm mattress. Same goes for super soft. Find a mattress that you can lay on without needing a pillow. Lay on the mattresses like you would at home. Lay on them in your sleeping position.
Finally: Ignore these rules. When you have found a mattress that you like, forget the rules. The most important factor to picking out a mattress is comfort. If the $500 mattress set is most comfortable, get it. If it's the $5000 set, that's the one. If the most comfortable mattress is the rock hard name brand, go for it.
Also, make sure that you look into your store's comfort guaranty. Lots of stores offer a 30 night trial. Find out how it works, if they refund your money, give you in store credit, what the criteria are, and what additional charges you might be liable for will be.
