When night driving, if i go under 55mph...my headlights/dash lights/etc sort of flicker/dim. This also happens while idle when I turn my air/heat up. Is this likely the fault of the alternator?

i own a repair shop, and yes this is the alternator causing this to happen its not putting out enough charge to keep the battery up ,when its under a strain, you might want to get it replaced as soon as you can ,because it will eventually go all the way out so don't wait till that happens get if repaired before it goes out its cheaper that way,you don't have to pay a tow bill on it,,good luck i hope this help,s.

NEVER repeat NEVER replace any part till you know what the problem is. Too many "mechanics" want to replace parts on a guess. Have your alternator checked. Could be a loose connection or slipping belt. You don"t say what vehicle you have. I have been driving Chrysler vehicles for years and all they usually need is new brushes. Cost about $ 3.00

all answers thus far are legit. To sum it up, here's what needs to be checked:
1. check battery wires for proper connection
2. check alt belt for adequate tension and wear
3. have alt checked by parts store or mechanic (do not take battery cable off with engine running to test alt. this causes other problems in today's vehicles)
4. check for loose ground wire where it leaves battery and attaches to body of car and where it attaches to engine block.
5. check that car is idling fast enough, low, low rpm can cause strange problems
