Roosevelt wanted to enter the war at the bequest of Churchill but he needed public support. Relationships with japan were heating up over economic barriers the U.S. had imposed on them and, against military advice, he transferred the fleet from California to Pearl harbor and ordered the ships docked except for the aircraft carriers. Most Naval commanders openly questioned this and thought it foolish.

The Japanese were enticed into attacking Pearl Harbor giving Roosevelt the reason he needed to enter the war. Most surviving Naval Commanders feel like this was the case.

The plan to attack Iraq, by the way, is outlined in the document titled "Rebuilding America's Defenses" at the site pnac.com which was established by Cheney and Jebb Bush in 1997. The "need for a Pearl Harbor type attack" on the U.S. that could be blamed on Iraq is mentioned.

America was forced to get involved in December 1941 when it was attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbor and then Germany declared war on it a few days later.
By this time the war in Europe had been going since September 1939.

The U.S. officially entered WWII on the 7th of December 1941, after the Pearl Harbor attack, Carried out by a Japanese fleet under the command of Admiral Yamamoto.
Initially they declared war on Japan, but a couple of days later Nazi Germany, Italy and their allies declared war on the United States.

Unofficially the USA were already helping the UK and Commonwealth countries by sending 50 destroyers, volunteers to the RAF, and raw materials.

Later they started sending enormous quantities to the USSR, which, thanks to their help got stand against the invaders.

First war act of the USA was the Doolittle raid on Tokyo, which did very little harm to the city, but scared the s*** out of the population. It was seen as retaliation to Pearl Harbor.

The US didn't have any choice in the matter. Japan declared war on the US, and Germany followed suit as part of the Axis pact. However even without the conflict in the Pacific, I think the German Navy would have eventually drawn the US into the war.

The U.S. was unofficially involved by lending aid to the Chinese with the American Volunteer Group (AVG -- Flying Tigers, commanded by Claire Chennault) and with the British with Roosevelt's Lend/Lease Act, sending materiel and tech. support to fend off the threat of invasion during the Battle of Britain. We also had people volunteering in the Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War and the Eagle Squadron -- again, in Britain. We were drawn into the war (officially) with the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. Chennault was told to disband his squadrons and return home. And the U.S. officially entered the war against the Germans when they torpedoed the USS RubenJames off the coast of Iceland.

I think that the Japanese acted very stupidly by bombing Pearl harbour. Before that the Americans refused to get pulled into the War - call it ennui, call it a false sense of security or call it "turning a blind eye" to the Axis powers. If the Japs had not bombed Pearl Harbour, history would have been different.

Because we were against what the axis powers were doing. We tend to rush in at the end of wars and claim the victory.
