1. Change your oil. Oil gets contaminants which can eat into your engine block if it just sits.
2. Top off your fuel tank. If you leave any air, water can condense out of it and potentially rust your tank.
3. Put max pressure in your tires. If they sit for too long, you can get flat spots which won't warm out. You can also lift the bike off of the ground with a lift ($100 from Wal*Mart) or bike stands.
4. Put Sta-bil in the gas tank. This keeps the fuel fresh and prevents it from turning to varnish and gumming up your injectors or jets. Run it for a minute or so to get the sta-bil into the lines and injectors.
5. If it's outdoors, put a breathable bike cover on it. You don't want condensation on the inside of the cover rusting your bike.
6. Wash it and put two coats of wax on it for protection.
If you're not planning on actually riding it, don't take it out for short warm up trips (as in just to warm it up). It really doesn't help and could hurt. If you're going to actually ride it, just remember to clean it well (if you got salt on it), top off the tank and put more sta-bil in it before you put it away.
Edit: Yea, forgot that. Disconnect the battery and put it on a trickle charger. You can get one for a few bucks (I bought one for $40 at the local Checkers).

this is risk-free regardless of if this is charged: Discharged batteries emit hydrogen--remember the Hindenburg disaster? That replaced into hydrogen! shop it in a cool place. Leaving it on concrete is wonderful--it relatively is an previous fable that this discharges the battery or does it the different harm. A trickle charger, at the same time with a Deltran Battery mushy, will make commencing the bike interior the spring a breeze.

Drain all the gas out, disconnect the battery, cover and park inside a dry place.
If you can't drain all the gas out, just start the bike once a month and run it for 10 mins.
Remember a bike runs better if you never store it. Get a heated seat & grips and ride it some, or just sell it.

change the oil, start the bike and let it run for a couple of minutes shut it off and drain all the gas out of the tank and carburetor, cover the bike with a blanket especially the gas tank this will help keep most of the moisture off the bike.
