can some one please help me with my midi connection configuration of my keyboard with my comp?

i have a midi usb cable and psr 2000 keyboard i am new to connecting my keyboard to my comp i dont have a audiophile or audigy soundcard so i got the midi usb cable can some one help me configure it and please tell me about any freeware music software with which i can test it . i need to record what i play on my kb to my comp and do a little bit of composing please help
