Well, there are many schools of thought on where the game originated, but the first game played by rules that VAGUELY resemble today's game was played in November, 1869 between Princeton and Rutgers. Rutgers won the game 6-4.

I've heard that it involved gradually from a sport brough over to England by the Jutes and other invading peoples.
In the US, it's been around for about 110 years, in the collegiate league.
