I do that when my little boy is shopping with me to keep him quiet and I always pay for it as well, I just pass the empty wrappers to be scanned

I can't even imagine being so desperate to do that. If I am starving-hungry, it is never for anything that you could open a package and snack on. When I am that famished I want thick, cooked food. But I have eaten an entire container of olives in the car on my way home from the store.
I have on occasion, though, when she was a toddler, allowed my daughter to open a box of animal crackers to snack on, just for the sheer distraction that then allowed me to finish the shopping. Paid for it at checkout of course.

Other then the pop I pick up when I'm in the checkout, I only do it if my sugers low & I don't think it could wait until I'm done shoping...
I've been with alot of my friends who will give their kid a box of snacks to open, then once the kid gets them open give them a pouch of them....mostly to keep the kid entertained for awhile...
I've seen random people in stores open up stuff before putting it in their cart & tasteing it to see if they like it or not, then put the stuff back & grab an unopened one...WTF!!!
I once seen a guy open up a loaf of bread, get two slices, open up a slice of cheeze & a piece of lunchmeat, make a sandwhich and walk outta the store eating it....
I've also seen people basicly "prepeare" full meals, take them to the furniture section and eat them, then lay down on the futons for a couple of hours. This was at walmart at like 8pm. I asked why they did that, they said they were hungry, don't have any food at home, and their check can't get cashed for another 4 hours.....
It isn't stealing until you leave the store....

I see it all the time. I work in a food store. People take a bite out of a piece of fruit and then hide it behind something, or they just help themselves to the salad bar. We find peanut shells shoved under shelves, cookies open and a few taken out. I could go on and on. My answer to your question is no. Most of it never makes it to the checkout to be paid for.

the only thing i have opened is water or coke, something to drink while i am wheeling (i am in a wheelchair) around the grocery store, the i give the open drink container to the cashier.
it is funny to see a new cashier, their eyes get big especially when the container is empty.
the stores expect that here in AZ especially in the summer, the AC only works so well, when the temp is tipping the scales at a 115 degrees.

Yes. Shopping with a toddler is quite the experience. I usually open the Goldfish crackers for her while we shop.
I even gave her a banana once, and then had the cashier ring up the other banana I bought twice, so I could pay for the one she ate.

The only thing I have ever opened in the grocery store has been chocolate milk Chug. It's usually gone or almost gone before I hit the checkout... and I always pay for it.
