For your sore throat - take some cough drops. I've also heard other users on her say something about Lemon Tea or Lemon Honey tea (one of the two I think).

While it is true to get an infection of the hospital, please remember that the hospital also has facial masks to wear that prevent other germs from getting to you. It is also very unlikely that you would get an infection from the hospital because of the protocols and procedures taken to prevent infection. That's why the hospitals are so strict on handwashing and infection control.

Good luck to you.

You can take Robitussin DM, cough drops and hot herbal tea with honey and lemon. My Dr. gave me codeine cough syrup for bronchitis when i was 8 weeks preg to help me sleep and gave me Robitussin DM for the day. I did have a bad cough and Codeine cough syrup is a catergory "C" drug for pregnancy which does pose potential risks, however I have asthma and have difficulty breathing too so my case is different. However, Robitussin is a category "B" which is in the same category as Tylenol. My Kaiser Permenente "Your Baby and You" handbook says the following for cold:

"Rest and drink plenty of water. use a humidifier. If you need medication, you may take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for aches and fever, Sudafed or Chlor-Trimeton for nasal congestion or Benadryl tablets. nasal sprays other than normal saline should not be used."

I know how you feel. It really sucks to be sick in your first trimester. I hope you feel better.

By the way, I had four previous miscarriages before this one and took no medicine with those and with this one I took all those things I mentioned above. No miscarraige and Im in my second trimester. Medicines are highly unlikely to cause miscarriage. In fact reading my pregnancy book by dr. sears set me straight on why misscarraiges happen and it isn't medicine, its chromosmomal and genetic. Because you have had two miscarriages, I would request to have an ultrasound to check for the heartbeat. Once you see a heartbeat, you are 95% out of the clear. Also, 8 weeks is a sound point. Most first trimester miscarriages happen prior to the eight week point!!!

The safest thing - REGULAR STRENGTH Tylenol to help with the aches and pains, as well as any fever. With having previous miscarriages, I would be hesitant with the decongestant until getting the all clear from a Dr. I took the regular strength Tylenol and a regular strength decongestant, and that was it. If I had a sore throat, I used the throat spray. Nothing more. Is it still hell? Yes it is. Did I feel better doing this? Yes.

If you think that a doctor would need to see you, don't be afraid to go in. The germs will be minimal, and that will be the least of your concerns. If you have something worse than a cold (bronchitis), a doctor will be able to better treat you by seeing you.

Good luck!!!

I was able to take benadryl and tylenol. But the best thing is to consult with the doctor or call the er and see if there is someone who can tell you what you can take. And for the sore throat gargle with salt water. Drink lots of liquids, hot liquids are the best. It helps clear the head, due to the steam. The cool mist humidifiers are good to have, I did and it helped. Also put a warm cloth on your eyes to relieve some of the pressure. Sleep in a sitting position so you can breath easier. BUT call the doctor or go to the ER. That is the best remedy.Good luck and take care.

My doctor told me that I could only take Robitussin - the plain kind with nothing added. There really isn't too much you can take while you're pregnant. Take some tylenol for the sore throat, and grab some Robitussin for the cough. Elevate your head so that you can breathe better and get some sleep. Use some vicks vapor rub, and put it on your chest and right under your nose. Call the doctor's office in the morning and see if they can see you if you're still feeling pretty miserable. Good luck! I hope you feel better!

You should be able to take any over the counter cough medicine. you can look on the box or the warning label to see if anything affects pregnancy. If you're scared you might want to just wait until the on-call Dr. calls you back. You could use cough drops for your throat/cough and take a childrens benadryl or something for the rest of your symptoms. If you're really scared you might not want to take anything at all and just get lots of sleep, but I dont think you have anything to worry about because all the meds listed above are completely safe and haven't been linked to pregnancy problems. Good Luck!

Take a hot shower to help clear your nose and eyes. It will also help the muscle aches. You may end up doing this several times tonight before you get to the doctor in the morning.

Cepacol lozenges will stop the cough and soothe your throat.

It concerns me that you feel like you can't breathe - if this is because you're all stuffed up - take the hot shower. If this is because your chest is all congested - go to the ER tonight or to your doctor first thing in the morning. You may have an infection in your lungs (bronchitis) or in your throat. And you definitely want to get antibiotics A.S.A.P if that is the case.

Hope that helps. I have 3 of my own, 30+ months of pregnancy and the stretch marks to prove it!

Jen

When your on-call doctor calls back ask him about ZYCAM in addition to other over-the-counter meds. ZYCAM can stop a cold from getting worse, it's great if you get in there quick.

Unfortunately medications are very limited. You can take Tylenol for the aches and pains, and Cepacol throat losenges for the sore throat. Other than that, eat lots of chicken soup and get some rest.
I had a cold back in the spring and it felt like the worst cold I ever had, since I couldn't take anything. I was bedridden for four days.

I would ask a pharmacy before you take anything, especially since this pregnancy may be high risk due to the previous miscarriages, but I'll tell you what I took when I had a cold (from my doctor's advice.) I was told I could take Benedryl, Sudafed, and Tylenol (for pain.) I only took the Benedryl for two days, I was so drowsy I could only take it at night, but that was when I was always worse.

I don't think there's any cold medicine you can take. When i was pregnant with the same symptoms, my doctor prescibe Claritan to help with the congestion and allergies. From experience I wouldn't take anything, When I took NYQUIL when i was pregnant once, A drug test came back positive for PCP in my blood and the hospital had threatened to take the baby if i came back positive after delivery. I was horrified I never tried any drugs, so be careful.
