Tough, smart, fearless and very, very clever, Odysseus embodies all of those characteristics that exemplifed the Greeks of the time. He teaches the secret of wine to Polyphemus, gets him drunk then blinds him. Thus he is also ruthless. Greece was a hard, mountainous country, full of competing city-states and needed aggressive, adaptable people willing to put it all on the line in order for their cities, their country and themselves to survive & thrive. In order to accomplish this they needed leaders most like unto themselves or like magnified versions thereof. He is a good leader because he is willing to take the fore and the risks with the cyclops. At least the way I see it. Good luck - and read the book, you will enjoy it.

He reveals his cleverness in how he gets out the cave; he shows foresight in refusing to reveal where his ship is. He is an epic hero because he shows determination and skill.
