They're made so the clock corresponds to daylight. It was convenient to break the world into one-hour zones, which would give you 24. The zones are determined by state and national boundaries and population concentrations, so they aren't perfectly straight north-south lines. But the general result is that the sun is always about highest at noon, no matter where you are. That only leaves the question of how we determine when we move from one day to the next. That would be the international date line, running down through the Pacific ocean and carefully avoiding almost everything.

There are really no such thing as time zones as time is "digital" and cannot be properly measured. time does not travel in a linear fashion. time exists at every time being the same time.
The reason mankind has implemented "time" is so that your bodily functions are thrown out of whack and into the workforce. If we all ingored time, we would surely be late for everything just as we would be early for every other thing. Time zones are their so you feel like your a part of the world. thats why i totally ignore them!!!!
Its this same reason that the theory of time travel has been broken down and now seems more inplausible then ever to control let alone DO!!!!!

The time zones are determined by politicians with the goal of having the sun approximately overhead at 'local noon' in each zone.
