The difference is DVDR is readable only after its recorded and cannot be overlapped, and the DVDRW is read-writable and can be overlapped.

the simplest way to answer this is a DVDR is a writable DVD or in other words a burn once disk.
A DVD-RW is a DVD rewritable disk wich allows you to burn images onto the disk then earse the image to burn another image onto it. I perfer DVD-RW disks for making backups of files i change a lot... I use DVDR's for makeing one time only disks...aka video coppy, pictures, and other media stuff.

DVDRW you can re wight to it like you wright to floppy you can format it and write again DVDR just burn it.

DVDRW could be erased or rewritten up to a thousand times

You can only burn info onto a DVD-r once but its cheaper. A DVDRW alows you unlimmited burns and the ability to erase the disk but they cost more.

DVD R you can burn files on to but cant remove them when on . dvd rw you can burn files onto & remove at any given time over & over . you need dvd burning software to back up ur data files you want to keep as win xp does not support dvd.r or dvd rw. or dvd- dvd + you can only use cd r & cd rw .cds with win xp burner
