Othello is a black Moor, who is appointed as ruler or despot of Venice, where he marries a white woman named Esmeralda, with whom he falls passionately in love. She comes to love him also, but his passionate nature causes him to doubt her fidelity to him. His trusted aide, Iago (for reasons delibertely obscured by the author), connives to cause increasing doubts and finally complete conviction that Esmeralda is betraying him. He strangles her in an intense scene, and thereby ends his career, his marriage, and his life.
