GM says something close to 60,000 counting nuts and bolts and washers and all the little stuff.

It really depends on the Make/Model/Year/options etc.
I have been working on cars/trucks/suvs for many many years.
The transmission alone can have hundreds of parts. On a modern
car the steering wheel alone can contain around 15 parts. The shift lever system in my car has at least 50 parts associated with its function.
You really cannot answer this question exactly but believe me, If I was to completely tear down your car down to its individual parts and lay them on the ground side by side you would freak out.
