In the summer of 1781, after six years of war, the American Army was struggling. The British occupied New York City. A second British army lead by General Lord Cornwallis ravaged the South - capturing Charleston, Richmond, and apparently was heading for the Chesapeake Bay. Mutiny plagued the American army in New York and New Jersey.

All except St. Augustine. This city was in the Spanish hands. Charleston was mainly a Tory city, stayed loyal to the crown, throught out the Revolutionary War that the British did not really feel it had to " capture" it.
The British left Boston and went to Canada because they lost this city and as to Philidelphia they only held this city for a short time. New York City they held for the majority of the war. This is where the British surrendered.

All except St. Augustine. New York City was the center command post for northern operations. Boston was occupied before the wa even started and was blockaded in response to the Boston Tea Party. Charleston was the main command for Souther operations. and Philadelphia fell to th eBritish causing the Continental Congress to flee their headquarters there.

Well I can tell you two they never bothered with,,, Charleston, and St. Augustine. They may have been tenacious, but had no desire to march 1200 miles south, after landing, nor did they bother sailing that far south. There was nothing to conquer below Virginia, even though St. Augustine had already been established for 300 years approximately.
