Absolutely!! I was emotionally abused for twenty years by my step-mother and father. When issues come up between myself and my wife and she says something that sounds like what I have heard before I respond defensively without thinking.

My wife lived with a man who abused her for 19 years and she responds defensively too.

We have both had to relearn how to communicate in order to have a good marriage.

I cannot think of one situation, but we have had many. Usually a sentence is all it takes to put one of us on the defensive. We usually have to stop the conversation and think about what happened and then we start over.

Take care,
Troy

Yes. My current husband of 26 years had to endure my midjudging of him because I would constantly compare his actions with those of my ex. I eventually learned that similar situations are often not as similar as they may at first appear. So, I eventually learned to evaluate each new situation separately from past experience. Not easy, but its a personal growth thing.
