In English Class, we are not supposed to use "You" in essays, so we are having a funeral. We are going to say that you got "word flu" (bird flu) but what else can we do??

Actually, this is very important, because we sometimes use "you" in a general sense: "if you spend too much money, you will go bankrupt" -- meaning anyone who spends too much money will go bankrupt. But I've noticed a lot of internet fights starts when someone takes the general "you" personally. So, it's better to nix the you.

An old-fashioned replacement for "you" is "one." "If one spends too much money, one will go bankrupt."

A more modern (but kind of awkward) replacement is third-person singular or plural. "If a person spends too much money, s/he will go bankrupt." "If people spend too much money, they go bankrupt."

And even more modern, but slightly controversial, is something like this: "If anyone spends too much money, they will go broke." Oh, the grammar teachers are rolling in their graves! But it is supported by diverse experts such as Bill Walsh and Steven Pinker. (Bill Walsh is a copyeditor with a website called The Slot, and Steven Pinker is a brain scientist who studies how we process words.)

Hope that helps. The "we" thing you are doing works fine, too.

You can.. er I mean it's completely possible to have a wake for "You", where you.. er I mean someone can read an eulogy. The eulogy can't have "you" in it, because it's already dead. :)
