before 1980-something a single X was the same as NC-17 is today. Few studios dared to use the rating on normal movie and the adult film industry adopted it as their standard often adding multiple X's to imply that they were more adult than just a simple X
to my knowledge the most famous non-porn X rated movie was 'Midnight Cowboy' with Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight as Male prostitutes in NYC. Oddly enough due to the subjective nature of ratings it was later re-rated as R

Bad is up to the individual. X rated movies leave nothing to the imagination showing people have sex. R rated movies leave nothing to the imagination about people getting violently killed. So, what's bad, watching people having sex or being killed?Although the killing is fake and the sex isn't.

IN the US...x ratings are for movies containg various levels of sexually explicit content...the more x's the more explicit the content. In some other countries x ratings are given for levels of violence, which explains alot about the US doesn't it.

R rated - language, sexual suggestive content
X - rated - sexual content (mostly what is known as soft porn - in other words you know what they're doing, but you don't see very much detail)
XX - rated - mostly one on one, you see pretty much everything
XXX - rated - very hard core - multiple partners, very graphic sexual scenes, lots of "money shots" (look it up)
